How the index works

You usually pick a restoration company in a hurry, with water on the floor or smoke in the walls. Restoration Index is for the ten minutes you have before you call.

For every company we read its own website and note what it says it does: water, mold, fire and smoke, sewage and storm work, whether it answers around the clock, whether it works with insurance claims, how it prices and what happens during a job. Then we check what a website can't prove on its own, such as whether the business is registered with the state, against public records. Every line on a company's page links to where it came from and carries the date we read it.

The Evidence Score

Each company gets an Evidence Score out of 100, built from fixed weights that are the same for every company. Anything we couldn't find scores zero. We don't spread its points over the items we did find, so one known fact can't produce a high score.

Beside every score sits its coverage: the share of the 100 points we were able to check at all. A company is ranked only when coverage reaches 70%. Below that it still appears in the comparison tables with what we found, and it moves into the ranking once the missing checks are done.

Why there are no star ratings

We don't publish star ratings, review counts or grades from review sites. They mostly show how often a company asks for reviews, and nobody can check them line by line. Where we know a company's Google profile, we link to it so you can read the reviews there.

What the numbers above mean

"Reviewed" counts every company whose website we read. "Listed" is the smaller group that met the listing bar: a stated restoration service, a real US business you can reach, a town we could read and evidence from two independent kinds of source. The others keep a page that explains what was missing, so the company can send us the evidence.
